When you’re thinking of adding a deck to your home, it’s important to consider what you want to use it for. If you plan on using your deck for relaxing or entertaining, then you will want to choose a design that fits those purposes. A simple, rectangular deck may work well for grilling and dining, while a more elaborate design with multiple levels and features may be better suited for lounging.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you dream of a new deck:
Deck Shape and Size
How big is the space you have to work with and what kind of design fits best? A larger deck may be better suited for grilling/entertaining while a smaller one can fit in more seating. What shape: rectangular, square, L-shaped? You have options. Think outside the box.
Material Used
Decks are typically made from wood or composite materials.
Wood decks come in different types including cedar, redwood or pressure-treated pine. The most commonly used are redwood or cedar because they both look great but require more upkeep than other options such as composite material which lasts up to 50 years without needing repairs.
Composite materials come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes that mimic real wood, but typically last much longer without needing repairs or replacement. These decks can also be custom shaped to fit the design you have in mind for your home which is what makes them popular with homeowners when compared to traditional wooden options.
Railing and Stairs
Railings and stairs required safety features on decks and should be considered when designing your deck. Railings come in different materials such as wood, metal, or composite and can be custom designed to fit the look of your home. You will also need to decide if a ramp is necessary for accessing the deck. That could be a great feature for older or disabled guests, or young children.
Lighting
Adding lighting to your deck at night can add ambiance and security. There are a variety of options for deck lighting from solar powered lights to low voltage systems that run off an outdoor outlet.
Furniture & Decor
It’s important to consider the furniture you want for your deck, which can be custom-built or purchased separately. Adding decorations such as planters and outdoor rugs will complete the overall look of your deck space.
